New Jersey City University swept Baruch in a conference doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Baruch (10-13, 8-8 CUNYAC) received solid pitching for the second straight doubleheader, but could not generate offense, as they were limited to one hit in each game.
The Gothic Knights (18-12, 11-3 CUNYAC) won the first game, 2-1, behind the pitching of Rob Motacki (Union, NJ/Union). He had eight strikeouts and retired the final 13 batters of the game.
Tristan Cetto (Bellmore, NY/W.C. Mepham), who pitched his fourth consecutive complete game, recorded six strikeouts and also retired the final 13 batters of the game.
Baruch scored their lone run of the afternoon in the first inning. Ray Mowatt (Bronx, NY/LaGuardia) singled, stole two bases, and came home on a fielder's choice by Thomas Russo (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep).
Mowatt is a perfect 37-37 in stolen bases, dating back to last season.
In the nightcap, Ahson Shahid (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) shut down Baruch by allowing only one hit, striking out five, and one walk to secure the conference win.
Mike Etkin (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) pitched another solid game, allowing only two earned runs, with five strikeouts and one walk.
He kept the Bearcats within striking distance, but the team was not able to respond with a rally.
The losses keep Baruch from a Top Four CUNYAC finish and berth in the conference tournament in Binghamton, New York.
